Research & Development
Throughout his professional career, Dr. Mukhopadhyay has been active in research and development. These activities led him to author over 50 technical articles published in peer-reviewed, first-class international journals.
In many complex projects, Dr. Mukhopadhyay inserted his creative ideas leading to innovative solutions. For example, when he was tasked by the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation to model the fate and transport of certain pollutants coming from the waste water discharge of cruise ships in certain coastal waters of Alaska, Dr. Mukhopadhay developed the hydrodynamic models of water circulating in the coastal zones by collaborating with a noted Russian scientist with specialization in geophysical fluid dynamics and access to the detailed bathymetric data of Alaskan coast collected for maritime activities. In another contrasting environment of arid southwest of the United States, where the customary method of delineation of flood hazard areas around riverine systems could not be applied on alluvial fans and piedmont plains, Dr. Mukhopadhyay developed an innovative method using theory of kinematic waves of overland flow models. Another example where Dr. Mukhopadhyay applied his proclivity for research and development, was development of a simple yet highly practical flood alert system for the city garages adjacent to a highly flood prone area in downtown Houston. There are many such examples in the project portfolio of Dr. Mukhopadhyay.
Recently to Dr. Mukhopadhyay has authored two comprehensive, contemporaneous, authoritative texts titled Applied Hydrology and Open Channel Hydraulics. In both these books he has seamlessly integrated fundamental theoretical aspects of the subjects with the modern software applications by drawing numerous real-world examples based on his own project experience and research work for the solutions of practical problems, often encountered by hydrologists and hydraulic engineers.
